A new study reveals a drop in illegal file sharing in the UK while music streaming services such as Pandora, YouTube, and Groove Shark are on the rise. Music Ally teamed with sister consumer research company The Leading Question and determined that a third of music-loving teenagers in the U.K. have changed from illegal downloads to preferring legitimate streaming sites. The steady stream of new MSI laptops seems to have stopped momentarily…just long enough for the company to push out an all new GPU, anyway. Today, the Taiwan-based company–which has a hand in all sorts of consumer electronics–is announcing its DR4890 Cyclone series graphics card, which packs 800 stream processors, 1GB of GDDR5 memory, and a 10cm extra large fan. Face it. A USB flash drive can be a really great way to carry around data you need to get your hands on when you’re away from your computer or network.
Problem is, you’re not gonna put anything too sensitive on it for fear of losing it.

Despite the general hubbub surrounding Windows 7′s launch (Oct 22), it seems that businesses are less than thrilled at the idea of parting with their money to upgrade to Windows 7.
According to Reuters, a survey carried out by ScriptLogic Inc. shows that 6 out of 10 businesses will pass over upgrading to Windows 7 – mostly in an attempt to save a buck and avoid any loss of productivity due to software issues. As the economy here in America creeps back into gear, the online gaming industry is reaping the benefits. According to a new survey, video game addicts who aren’t already turning their attention to the tube (or even a subset of those who are) are looking to low-cost online games to pass the time.
Industry tracker ComScore found that around 87 million US Internet users visited online video game sites in May, which is a 22% increase from the same month last year. We’d heard that the economy was forcing more users to remain planted at home, but wow–22% percent! According to ComScore, the “continuing surge in online game play was attributed, in part, to people opting for cheaper entertainment alternatives in grim economic conditions.” Read the rest of this entry »

Verizon Wireless and Sprint both launched the BlackBerry Tour today. This smartphone from RIM offers support for both CDMA and GSM networks, making the phone compatible with various networks around the world. The Tour operates on Verizon’s and Sprint’s EVDO Rev. A mobile broadband networks and can also roam on other high speed HDSPA networks. When roaming, the phone offers 850/900/1800/1900 MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE as well as support for 2100 MHz UMTS/HSPA networks.
The Tour offers a variety of business and personal features that take advantage of these high-speed capabilities. Personal features include access to social networking sites such as Facebook, Flickr, and MySpace. Users can also share pictures and videos via MMS and instant message. t has taken awhile, but Nokia’s response to Apple’s App Store is finally open for business. After being teased a few weeks ago, Nokia has announced that its Ovi Store is now live in select markets, with AT&T looking to join in here in the United States later this year. Nokia customers can surf over to store.ovi.com on their device browser in order to begin downloading, personalizing and loading their phones up with applications, games, videos, podcasts, productivity tools, web and location-based services, etc. Read the rest of this entry »

In recent months, Microsoft’s ads have tried to convince us that Apple computers are expensive and not worth the high price. Now, Microsoft is targeting Google’s search engine with its latest marketing campaign. The software giant is preparing to launch an $80 to $100 million ad campaign for Bing (previously known as Kumo). Leave it to Rambus to keep the memory industry from resting on its laurels. Currently, DDR3 has a data rate limit of 3200Mbps, but all that’s gearing up to change. Announced today, Rambus has unveiled a set of innovations that can advance computing main memory beyond said limit, and needless to say, these “advancements” are available now for licensing. The collection of improvements promises to let designers achieve higher memory data rates, higher effective throughput, better power efficiency and the increased capacity necessary for future computing applications.
